The Challenge

Just like Dallas competes with some heavy-hitting travel destinations like San Antonio and New Orleans, Angel Fire Ski Resort, medium-sized ski resort in northern New Mexico, competes with big Colorado resorts.

Angel Fire resort approached Slingshot in 2019, looking for an agency to help them grow trips during ski season, and throughout the year. It’s been around for generations, and is a great place for families. But in general, New Mexico resorts struggle to compete with Colorado resorts.

The Insights

We mined a ton of secondary research, conducted our own primary research, and discovered a few important insights:

  • Angel Fire enjoys a considerable advantage in awareness levels versus nearly all other competitive mountains.
  • Audiences will travel mainly as families or multigenerationally, between 3–5+ nights.
  • Choices are based primarily on price and non-ski considerations.
  • Key competitors are perceived as pricier – a potential window of opportunity.
  • Respondents like New Mexico for being less crowded, less expensive, and closer to home versus Colorado.
  • Of the direct competitors, only Taos, Ski Apache, Crested Butte, and Purgatory are putting sustained efforts behind paid digital targeting potential out-of-state visitors.
  • Ski Apache likely targets El Paso, Lubbock, and other markets closer to southern New Mexico, leaving Taos, Crested Butte, and Purgatory as the primary competition (based on awareness levels and marketing efforts).
  • Crested Butte and Purgatory emphasize lodging promotions, while Taos focuses on pass sales.

Recommended Positioning:

  • Own “family” through brand messaging.
  • Provide better value than primary competitors.
  • Embrace New Mexico’s proximity, uniqueness, and relative seclusion.
  • Use imagery to demonstrate quality of terrain, non-ski activities, lodging, dining options, etc.

"Create your next family tradition at Angel Fire, the full-service, four-season New Mexico family mountain resort that’s not too far from home, and a few turns away from typical."

Campaign Results

Our campaign launched just prior to the 2020 ski season. 2020 and 2021 became the two biggest years in Angel Fire’s history in terms of visitation.

In 2022, the campaign drove so much traffic they asked us to pause activity because they were consistently selling out of lift tickets and rentals.
