Will leisure travel bounce back in 2021?

As we noted in our Fall Leisure Travel Forecast, people seemed poised to take limited trips again as we headed into then holiday months. Then a surge in COVID cases hit. For our Winter 2020/2021 Travel Forecast, we surveyed 167 American leisure travelers in the height of the holidays about how they intended to travel (or not travel) in the first few months of 2021, and the differences are striking.

Among the key takeaways:

  • Overall, leisure travel intent is down from the Fall, largely connected to the late year surge in COVID-19 cases.
  • Among those who do intend to travel, confidence in air travel is on the rise.
  • Coinciding with an uptick in possible air travel is the willingness to travel to new destinations instead of familiar ones, which is up over 30% from the fall.
  • Longer trips are also back in vogue, with stays of 7+ nights up considerably.
